By GO Transit to Peterborough for the Day - Planning

Peterborough Transit is the public transport operator for the City of Peterborough. The majority of their system consists of twelve regular routes within the urban area of the city.

Christopher Greaves PeterboroughTransit_Overview.png

From a weekday tourist’s viewpoint the twelve regular routes provide great opportunity for exploring the city. A Wikepedia page says that buses run every forty minutes, but since I’ll just be leaping on the first bus that is leaving the depot what do I care?

What does a transit sign look like?

What three routes seem to offer the broadest view of the city?

What rules apply to (a) transfers (b) duration of ticket?

“Transfers are now valid for 90 minutes to enable connections to other routes.”

Every scrap of documentation I’ve read tells me that all 12 bus routes run on at most a 40-minute schedule; that makes it easy for me to schedule my trips.

Public Library seems 2 minutes away from terminal at Simcoe Street.

(I find it strange that there are several groupings of bus schedules yet they appear to be identical)

Five of the bus routes give quite obvious Grand Tours of the city; the remaining bus routes are shorter and are, therefore, probably good for filling in a half-hour or so. Unless the route goes to the end and then just sits there for half an hour.

Libraries

There are two libraries in town:-

Summer Hours (Victoria Day-Labour Day); Monday-Thursday: 10:30 am – 7 pm; Friday-Saturday: 10 am – 5 pm; DelaFosse Branch LibraryDelafosse Branch; Tuesday & Thursday: 2:30 – 7:30 pm; Saturday: 10 am – 3 pm.

Lift Locks

The Peterborough Lift Locks is a must-see. The dual lifts are the highest hydraulic boat lifts in the world.

The lift locks are serviced by the #11 (lime-green) and #9 (purple) bus routes.

Museums

Canadian Canoe Museum 910 Monaghan Road (& Lansdowne), Peterborough, Ontario K9J 5K4 “We visited the museum on a Thursday evening work my 2 boys. It was free that evening.” #7 purple or #8 black near Evinrude Centre (park?)

Peterborough Museum and Archives “This excellent museum is small but enough to see to make the trip worthwhile and it is free, although a donation is appreciated.” (Arbor/Ashburnham?) #9 purple or #11 green

Art Gallery of Peterborough “Free admission but they accept donations.” 250 Crescent Street, (off George Street #10 brown bus)

Hotels: There is much to do and see in Peterborough; is this going to be my first trip where I check into a hotel for 2 nights and make this a 3-day visit?

Travel

The Go Transit schedule indicates about two-and-a-half hours for the trip.

Christopher Greaves Weather_DSCN1442.JPG

I have thought of Mondays as my day of travel, in part because I had a regular schedule of free lunchtime concerts Tuesdays through Fridays, but some of those concerts have closed down for the summer, so I might postpone next week’s trip to Wednesday - 23º and 0% looks a lot better than 16 º and 25%!

Christopher Greaves Notes_DSCN1445.JPG

Here is the sheet of paper I will take with me. It reads:-

7:28 a.m. arr 9:49 (Note B4 and after)

I will catch the 7:28 train from Union; I feel no great need for an early start; I have learned from two day-trips so far that there is plenty of time to wander around. I want to record the balance in my Presto card at the start and at the end of my trip

Map & all-day pass $8.00

Immediately I get off the GO Transit bus I’ll collect a paper map of the city and an all-day pass for $8. If all the buses leave at 8:00 while my back is turned and I have 40 minutes in which to lick my wounds I will do so in a coffee shop with whatever documentation I have cllected from the bus terminal.

1- City Hall

And down to 12, 6: A summary of significant bus routes. Bus route #1 takes me past City Hall and gives me a Grand Tour of the north-western suburbs; and so on.

18:01, 20:06 dep

Likely departure times for the trip home. There is a bus at 16:04 if I am truly tired by then.

Since I plan to ride the buses quite a lot I’ll take a packed lunch with me. Rading time-in-restaurant for time-on-buses. ( Monday, June 22, 2015 I traveled light: A camera, podcast player, a pencil stub, small set of notes, and an apple which I ate on my walk to Union Station)

Thursday, June 25, 2015

Such a good day last Monday I am decided to return for a two-night three-day stay before I have finished all my day-away trips.
